How to Choose an Air Purifier Without Believing the Box
How to choose an air purifier comes down to a real HEPA filter, the right flow rate for your room, and filter costs. The coverage number on the box misleads.

Air purifiers are sold on a number. Some enormous figure for room coverage, printed large on the box, next to a picture of a family breathing contentedly. That number is close to useless on its own, and understanding why is most of what you need to know about how to choose an air purifier.
The rest is one filter type, one flow rate, and a bit of honesty about what these machines can and cannot fix.
What an air purifier actually removes
A purifier with a proper particulate filter is genuinely good at removing things suspended in the air: dust, pollen, pet dander, mould spores, smoke particles and the fine particulate matter that dominates outdoor air quality readings in most cities.
It is much weaker on gases and odours unless it carries a separate activated carbon stage, and even then the carbon saturates and needs replacing far sooner than the particle filter. It does nothing for anything that has already settled on your floor or your sofa, which is where a large share of household dust lives.
It is not a substitute for ventilation, for fixing damp, or for removing the source of a smell. If something in the house is generating the problem continuously, the purifier is fighting a losing battle at your expense.
HEPA, and the words that sound like HEPA
True HEPA is a defined standard. The filter must capture at least 99.95 percent of particles at the hardest-to-catch size, around 0.3 micrometres, depending on the regional standard applied.
Terms such as HEPA-type, HEPA-like and 99 percent efficient are not that standard. They are marketing constructions designed to sit next to the real thing on a shelf. If the packaging will not commit to a specific efficiency figure at a specific particle size, assume it is not a true HEPA filter.
Carbon stages vary enormously too. A thin carbon-coated mesh is not the same as a substantial bed of granular carbon, and only the second does much for odours or gases.
The number that actually matters
Coverage claims are usually generated under ideal conditions with a single air change per hour, which is far too slow to be useful for allergies or smoke.
The figure worth finding is clean air delivery rate, which tells you how much filtered air the unit actually produces. From there the useful calculation is air changes per hour in your specific room. Four to five air changes per hour is the commonly cited target for allergy relief, and getting there usually means choosing a unit rated for a substantially larger room than the one you have.
A practical rule: take the coverage figure on the box and treat the unit as suitable for roughly half that area if you want it to do real work. That single adjustment prevents most disappointment with this category.
Noise is why purifiers get switched off
Almost every purifier is quiet on its lowest setting and audible to loud on the setting that actually cleans the room quickly. This matters more than buyers expect, because a purifier only works while it is running.
Check the noise figure at the highest speed rather than the lowest, since the low figure is the one advertised. For a bedroom, check whether the display can be dimmed or switched off, because a bright indicator light in a dark room becomes a nightly irritation.
Filter costs are the real price
The purchase price is a down payment. Particle filters typically need replacing somewhere between six and twelve months depending on use and air quality, and carbon stages sooner.
Before buying, find the replacement filter price and multiply by the number of years you expect to keep the unit. A cheaper machine with expensive proprietary filters frequently costs more over three years than a pricier one with reasonably priced filters. Check whether third party filters exist, and whether using them affects the warranty.
Washable pre-filters are genuinely useful because they catch hair and large dust before it reaches the expensive filter, extending its life.
Features worth skipping
Ionisers and ozone generators deserve caution. Some ionising functions can produce ozone as a by-product, and ozone is a respiratory irritant rather than something you want to add to indoor air deliberately. If a unit has an ioniser, check that it can be switched off, and be sceptical of anything marketed on ozone output.
Ultraviolet stages inside consumer purifiers generally have too little contact time to do much. Smart app connectivity is pleasant and changes nothing about air quality. Air quality displays are useful mainly as a prompt to run the machine, and their accuracy varies widely.
Sizing and placement in practice
Buy for the room you will actually use it in, and accept that one unit does not clean a whole house. Doors matter more than floor area, since air does not move freely between rooms.
Place it away from walls and furniture so air can circulate, ideally somewhere fairly central, and near the source if there is an obvious one. Running it continuously on a low or medium setting usually produces better results than blasting it for an hour a day.
Common questions
Do air purifiers help with allergies?
They can reduce airborne allergens such as pollen and pet dander, which helps some people noticeably. They do not touch allergens that have settled into carpet, bedding and upholstery, so a purifier works best alongside regular washing and vacuuming rather than instead of it.
Should I run it all the time?
Generally yes. Air is continuously re-contaminated from outside and from normal activity, so continuous running at a moderate speed keeps particle levels down better than short bursts at maximum. Factor that into the energy cost and filter life.
Does an air purifier remove smells?
Only with a substantial activated carbon stage, and only while that carbon has capacity left. Carbon saturates and stops working, often long before the particle filter needs changing, which is why a purifier that seemed to fix a smell quietly stops doing so.
Is an expensive purifier better?
Not automatically. What matters is a true HEPA filter, an adequate clean air delivery rate for your room, tolerable noise at a useful speed, and affordable replacement filters. A mid range unit that meets those four beats a premium one that fails any of them.
